WOOD CARE

WOOD CARE FOR LIVING WOOD DESIGN FURNITURE

Protecting & Preserving Your Wood Furniture

Your handmade wooden furniture is an investment that increases in value over time.   We recommend that you follow the instructions below to ensure that your furniture will provide a lifetime of service and enjoyment to your family.

KILN DRIED TO ACHIEVE HEIRLOOM QUALITY

All Living Wood Design furniture pieces are constructed from real trees and solid slabs of wood and professionally kiln dried to 6-8% moisture content before we create the pieces. This means that our pieces are heirloom quality and won’t warp, bow or develop large cracks over time.

NATURAL, SALVAGED ONTARIO WOOD SLABS WITH STUNNING GRAIN AND COLOUR

We seek out wood slabs with stunning colour, grain and character, often with interesting cracks and splits throughout. When we create a piece, we use a combination of epoxy and sawdust to close the cracks so that the surface is seamless. All of our pieces are constructed of 100% salvaged, organic slab wood from Ontario.

Care for your solid wood furniture

All of our items are thoughtfully made for easy care and built to last a lifetime. Unless otherwise requested for a custom piece, our designs are carefully hand polished with 100% pure and all-natural Rubio Monocoat. This is a unique, luxury hard-wax oil produced in Belgium that protects wood in a single coat, and protects wood at the cellular level. Rubio Monocoat is Zero VOC and is easy to apply and maintain with superior wear and liquid resistance. This product is also used for flooring and counter tops, so it is very durable.

Please do not apply any other type of product yourself to the furniture surface. Rubio Monocoat has a specially formulated product to refresh the surface called Rubio Monocoat Refresh Eco; it is a ready-to-use sprayable product that refreshes and restores all wooden surfaces that have been treated with Rubio oil. You can purchase this product online, and you only need to apply it every year or two to refresh the surface of your table. NATURAL WOOD FURNITURE REQUIRES PROPER HUMIDITY LEVELS

Solid wood adjusts throughout the year to the moisture content of the air.  As the weather changes, so does the relative humidity in your home and in the moisture content of the wood in your furniture. This means that furniture expands and contracts slightly. Micro lines in the wood that are filled with epoxy can expand and contract with extreme changes in humidity, so please try to avoid this by following some guidelines.

  • Wood does best in moderate conditions, without extreme fluctuations in temperature and a relative humidity of about 45-55%.
  • Your furniture piece can be safely cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth. Clean up any large liquid spills right away to prevent damage. You do not need to use placemats or coasters for regular table or glass ware for mealtimes. However, we advise against leaving glasses or vases filled with liquid on a table top for a prolonged period as the liquid can cause condensation and possibly a ring under the glassware.
  • Furniture ages more quickly if stored in a basement, attic, garage or warehouse.
  • Wood does not like extreme and sudden changes in temperature and humidity, such as turning off air conditioning in the middle of a hot summer and leaving your home for a week, or turning the heat way down in the middle of winter if you go away. Try to change temperature and humidity levels gradually in your home. If you are leaving your home for a few days or more, it’s best to maintain the temperature and humidity levels in your home as they were.
  • Place furniture away from all heat sources, such as radiators, heat runs or fireplaces, if possible.
  • Try to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
  • When this is not possible, reduce the amount of light streaming on any piece of furniture
  • Use trivets to hold hot objects on the table top to protect the wood.
